Holarctic; N. Atlantic Ocean; N. Pacific Ocean;
(1) N. Canada (Ellesmere, Baffin, Devon Is., Newfoundland), Greenland, Iceland, Jan Mayen, Faeroes, Bear Is., Spitsbergen (Svalbard), is. off n. Russia (Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya) s. off w. Norway, nw. Germany (Helgoland), British Isles (Ireland, Scotland, England) and France (Brittany, Normandy).
(2) Low Arctic and boreal zones of the N. Atlantic.
(3) Breeds in coastal e. Siberia (Wrangel Is., Chukotski Peninsula s. to Kamchatka, Kuril and Commander Is.), Pribilof and St. Lawrence Is., Alaska (Aleutians, n. Gulf of Alaska).
Disperses s. to Sakhalin Is., the Pacific coasts of Japan, Hawaii, w. Canada, the w. United States, nw. Mexico (Baja) and the Atlantic coasts of e. Canada, ne. United States and in Europe from ne. Russia s. in the North Sea to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, n. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium to n. France.

Winter: well out to sea off the s. coast of ALK, BCO, WAS, ORG, CAL and s. to Mexico (s. Baja) and s. Greenland, s. NWT (s. Baffin Is.), LAB, NFD, QUE (Gulf of St. Lawrence), PEI, NBR, NSC, MAE, NHP, MAS, RID, CNT, NYK (Long Island), NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR to ex. n. NCA.
(3) from the Pribilof and St. Lawrence Is., ALK (Aleutians, n. Gulf of Alaska) to c. BCO.
