S. Central America and tropical South America;
Three major populations and many small populations;
Highly fragmented distribution;
(1) Nw. and c. Costa Rica and w. Panama e. to Veraguas.
(2) E. Panama.
(3) Mountains of s. and se. Venezuela and adjacent Guyana and n. Brazil.
(4) Se. Venezuela (Mt. Roraima), Guyana, Surinam, Guiana, and ne. Brazil (Amapa).
(5) C. Amazonian Brazil from s. Para along the e. bank of the lower Rio Tocantins sw. to Serra dos Carajas along the w. slope.
(6) Se. Brazil (s. Goias, s. Bahia, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo s. to Santa Catarina), e. Paraguay and ex. ne. Argentina (Misiones).
Birds of uncertain race occur at the following locations:
Nw. Colombia (Serrania de San Lucas).
Se. Ecuador (Cordillera Cutuca, Cordillera del Condor).
N. and se. Peru (Junin, San Martin/Amazonas, cordillera Azul, Cuzco, and cloud forests above Rio Tavara, Puno).
Nw. Bolivia (La Paz, rio Tuichi).
S. and ne. Brazil (s. Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Alagoas, and s. Bahia).
