E. Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, c. Atlantic Ocean and nw. Indian Ocean;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Gulf of California (Consag Rock, San Pedro Martir and San Jorge Is.), Pacific coasts of sw. Mexico (Revillagigedo Is., Tres Marias, Isabela Is. and Alijos Rocks s. to Colima and Guerrero), Guatemala, sw. El Salvador in the Gulf of Fonseca, Honduras (both coasts), nw. Nicaragua, Costa Rica, nw. Panama (Swan Cay in Almirante Bay, Bocas del Toro), s. Colombia (Malpelo Is.), Ecuador, Galapagos Is. (Tower Is.), c. Peru, West Indies near Puerto Rico on Culebra and Vieques, the Virgin Is. and the Lesser Antilles s. to Grenada and Tobago, Curacao, is. off n. Venezuela (Los Hermanos, Los Roques), n. Brazil (Bahia), Cape Verde Is. (formerly on Sao Vicente, presently on Rombos, Brava, Sao Tiago, Boa Vista, Santo Antao and a few pair on Razo Is.), islands off Senegal, Gulf of Guinea to n. Angola. Ascension and St. Helena.
(2) Fernando Noronha, Ascension and St. Helena Is. in the s. Atlantic Ocean.
(3) Egypt (Gulf of Suez, Shadwan and Ashafri Is., Red Sea), Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman (Dhofar), Socotra Is., Gulf of Aden to Persian Gulf, Iran, Pakistan to nw. India in the nw. Indian Ocean. It may breed on Paracel Reefs (South China Sea) and Marquesas Is.
Disperses to sw. United States well off s. California as far n. as Washington and New York and s. to Brazil, c. Chile, s. China Sea (Paracel Is.) and Hainan(?). It has wandered to Hawaiian Is. (Nihoa, Kauai) and Johnston Atoll.
