W. Indian Ocean e. through the c. Pacific Ocean; Caribbean Sea and nc. Atlantic Ocean; C. Atlantic Ocean;
Three populations;
(1) N. and nw. Madagascar (Antsiranana, Nosy Be, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Mitsio), Diego Suarez, Comoro, Aldabra, Seychelles, Mascarenes (Mauritius and Reunion), Chagos, Maldives, Andaman, Cocos-Keeling Is.
(2) Christmas and on Pulau Nusa Penida and probably Ulu Watu off Bali.
(3) Hawaiian (Kauai often at Waimea Canyon, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii often at Kilauea Crater), Christmas, Austral, Fiji, Marquesas, Samoan, Society, Tonga (Eau Is.), Cook, Tuamotu Is., New Caledonia (Walpole Is.), Vanuatu (Monument Rock in Shepherd Group), Malo, Bonin and Volcano Is.
(4) Bermuda, West Indies (Bahamas, Great Abaco (Little Harbor, Great Guana, Tilloo Cays), Greater Antilles and Is. off Tobago).
(5) Fernando de Noronha, Ascension, Sao Tome, Fernando Po Is.
Disperses to se. United States sometimes as far n. as Nova Scotia, e. Guatemala, Brazil (Bahia), Gulf of Guinea, Somalia to ne. South Africa (Natal), Sri Lanka, w. Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas, Borneo, Sulawesi, Moluccas, New Guinea, Philippines as far n. as Japan and s. to n. Australia (nw. Western Australia, e. Queensland along the Barrier Reef off Cairns and off Brisbane and New South Wales off Wollongong) and New Zealand.
