W. and e. United States, ex. sc. Canada s. to c. Central America, and n. West Indies;
Fragmented distribution;
(1) W. United States (s. Oregon, s. Idaho, sw. Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska), nw. Mexico and n. Baja s. to ca. 30ºN and s. to se. Coahuila, and w. Zacatecas).
Non-breeding birds occur in sw. United States from cw. California, w. and c. Arizona, s. New Mexico, w. Texas, and Mexico s. to Jalisco, and San Luis Potosi.
(2) Sc. Canada (ex. s. Ontario and sw. Quebec), c. and e. United States (se. South Dakota, e. Nebraska, w. Iowa, se. Minnesota, s. Wisconsin, s. Michigan, c. New York, c. Vermont, c. New Hampshire and s. Maine s. to c. Kansas, c. Texas, Gulf Coast states, s. Florida) to Mexico s. from c. and sc. Sinaloa, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, and the West Indies, Greater Antilles (Cuba)(?).
(3) S. Baja and perhaps w. mainland Mexico (se. Sonora).
(4) E. Mexico from se. Coahuila, and sw. Nuevo Leon s. on e. high plateau to ne. San Luis Potosi, and possibly to s. Hidalgo.
(5) E. and s. Mexico from wc. Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas s. to e. San Luis Potosi and possibly also Tlaxcala and Puebla, Yucatan and Belize s. to Isthmus of Tehuantepec and n. and w. Chiapas.
Non-breeding birds winter in s. Mexico (Morelos, c. and n. Michoacan, and from s. Guerrero) e. in Pacific lowlands of Guatemala.
(6) Sc. Mexico from n. Hidalgo and Michoacan s. in semi-arid highlands to nw. Guatemala.
(7) Sw. and s. Mexico (Oaxaca and s. Chiapas?) and Guatemala(?).
