S. Pakistan, India (Keoladeo Ghana, Rajasthan and Jedanthangal, Madras), Sri Lanka (Parakrama Samudra Reservoir near Polonnaruwa), Nepal (Tarai), Bangladesh, sw. China (Hong Kong, w. Yunnan, s. Kwangsi, s. Kwangtung), Burma, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Malaysia, Indochina (s. Vietnam in the Mekong Delta), n. Java (Pulau Rambut, Pulau Dua and Solo Delta regions) and Borneo (formerly).
Winter visitor to Sumatra. Wanders irregularly to Afghanistan, Malaya and the Greater Sundas.
