Range
Coastal West Africa. Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts;
Two populations;
(1) Cape Verde Is., and coastal sw. Mauritana, Mali, Senegambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and Sao Tome, Fernando Po, Principe Is. and Annobon Islands in the Gulf of Guinea. Casual in the West Indies (Pueto Rico s. to Barbados and Trinidad).
(2) Red Sea coast from Egypt (s. Sinai), s. Israel (Eilat) to Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, n. Somalia, Socotra Is., Kenya (mainly along coast s. of Kilifi, but also at Lake Turkana, Lake Nakuru and Lake Magadi), Tanzania, w. Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, se. Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, w. India (to Pt. Calimere), Laccadive Is., nw. Sri Lanka. Isolated population in se. India (e. Nellore, Pulicat Lagoon). Also listed as occurring on Aldabra, the Comoros and Madagascar, but these records may be more appropriately attributed to the Dimorphic Egret;
