Caribbean coast of the West Indies, Central America, n. South America and the Galapagos Is.;
Fragmented distribution;
Mainly in the Caribbean region: ex. se. United States (ex. s. Florida in Florida Bay, Florida Keys), Mexico (breeds off n. Yucatan, Laguna Lagartos, disperses to Rio de Celestum in nw. Yucatan), West Indies (Bahamas on Abaco, Andros, Acklin, Great Inagua and on Cuba, Hispaniola, Gonave, Beata Is.), Netherland Antilles (breeds on Bonaire), coastal ne. Colombia (Atlantico, Magdalena, Manaure in Guajira), Venezuela (Falcon near Chichiriviche at the Cuare Wildlife Refuge, Miranda, Los Rogues Is.), Guyana, Surinam, irregularly s. to Guiana, ne. Brazil to the Amazon delta. Isolated population in the Galapagos Is. (James, Bainbridge Rock, Floreana, Jervis, Santa Cruz, s. Isabela).
