Range

N. to c. South America;
N. and e. Colombia (Cauca where it is confined to Lago de Sonso in Valle, middle Magdalena and Zulia Valleys, the e. lowlands), n. Venezuela (n. of the Orinoco), Surinam, Guiana, Amazonia Brazil (w. Bahia) s. to the Mato Grosso, Parana, Sao Paulo, e. Ecuador (upper Rio Pastaza), e. Peru, n. and e. Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz, Fortin Campero in Tarija on the Argentina border). There is an isolated population in w. Ecuador (Balzar, Guayas).
This species formerly was found in Guyana and Trinidad.
