United States to New York and s. to Georgia (Augusta) and n. Florida (Alachua County).
Winters mostly in the lowlands of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and e. Mexico (Alvarado and Camaronera Lagoons, Veracruz) s. in Guatemala, Honduras (Lake Yojoa, Caribbean lowlands), w. Costa Rica (Guanacaste, Tempisque Basin) and Panama and the West Indies in the s. Lesser Antilles. Vagrant in w. Europe (British Isles).
