Range

Sw. Australia; E. Australia;
Two populations;
(1) W. and sw. Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland s. to New South Wales (Murray-Darling Basin, Lake Brewster, Barren Box Swamp), South Australia, and Victoria (Lake Learmonth), Tasmania (Lake Dulverton). Vagrants reported from w. New Guinea (Waigeo Is., Vogelkop, Snow Mountains, Sepik, Trans-Fly, Port Morseby area. Has occasionally bred in e. Java and Sulawesi e. to the Solomon Is.
(2) Sw. Pacific (Banks Is. (Santo, Aore, Malo, Ambae, Efate, Erromango and Tanna Is.), Vanuatu (Gaua Is.) and New Caledonia.
Winters irregularly n. to Java, Sulawesi, Tasmania, Solomon Is., and New Zealand (formerly).
