Greenland, Iceland, Spitsbergen and Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland) s. to s. Finland and e. across n. Russia (New Siberian Is., Wrangel Is.) and Siberia to the Chokotski Peninsula, Anadyrland and the Commander Is., then in n. Alaska and e. across n. Canada (Prince Patrick Is., n. Ellesmere Is., Baffin Is. to n. Labrador) s. to s. limit of the tundra in s. and c. Alaska, n. Yukon, nw. British Columbia (an isolated population ca. 82km w. of Atlin), nw. to c. Mackenzie, s. Keewatin, ne. Manitoba (Churchill), shores of Hudson Bay and James Bay (Cape Henrietta Maria, Bear Is., Grey Goose Is., South Twin Is.) in n. Ontario, n. Quebec, coastal Labrador and ex. e. Quebec (Bradore Bay).
Formerly bred in Scotland and the Orkney Is.
Winters s. as far British Isles (n. Scotland, n. Ireland and e. England), Scandinavia, Barents Sea, Baltic Sea, rarely to n. shores of the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, United States s. to Washington and Oregon along the Pacific coast and Labrador and Newfoundland (Hare Bay) s. to South Carolina along the Atlantic coast and inland on the Great Lakes and lakes in c. Europe and c. Asia off the Kamchatka Peninsula, shores of the Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan off e. Korea, Kuril Is., n. Japan off Hokkaido and China (mid-Changjiang Valley, Hebei and Fujian).

Summer: Aleutians, ALK, n. YUK, ex. nw. BCO, n. and e. MAC, KEE, ne. MAN and n. ONT (Hudson Bay and n. James Bay), n. QUE and e. LAB;
Winter: Aleutians and along the Pacific coast of s. ALK, w. BCO, WAS, ORG to c. CAL (rarely), and along the Atlantic coast of se. LAB, NFD, e. QUE (Gulf of St. Lawrence), PEI, NBR, NSC, MAE, se. NHP, e. MAS, s. RID, CON, NYK, NJY, DEL, MYD, VIR, NCA and SCA. Also winters on open water on all of the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario) off s. ONT, WIS, MIC, ne. ILL, n. IND, n. OHO, nw. PEN and nw. NYK.
