Alberta (Grand Prairie region) and ex. sw. Saskatchewan (Brooks and Cypress Hills) and the nw. United States in sw. Montana (Red Rock Lakes Refuge), nw. Wyoming (Yellowstone National Park, w. Yellowstone), e. Idaho, e. Washington (Turnbull), se. Oregon (Malheur). Introduced to e. Nevada (Ruby Lake), w. South Dakota, w. Nebraska.
Winters from se. Alaska and coastal w. Canada in British Columbia (Queen Charlotte and Vancouver Is.) to nw. United States in s. to the mouth of the Columbia River and inland locally in e. Nevada, e. Idaho, sw. Montana, nw. Wyoming, sw. South Dakota and w. Nebraska. Formerly n. to n. Yukon, n. Mackenzie, n. Manitoba and James Bay s. to Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Indiana.
