Range

Sc. tropical South America;
Three small, isolated populations;
Ex. restricted range (32,000 km2);
Sc. Brazil (Rio San Francisco drainage, w. Bahia, Alto Parana in the headwaters of the Rio Parana, headwaters of the Rio Tocantins and Rio Tibagi drainages, Parana. Emas and Chapada dos Veadeiros National Parks, Goias. Rio do Sono, Tocantins and Serra da Canastra National Park, mountains dividing Paranaiba and Sao Francisco basins, Minas Gerais). Jalapao State Park. Ne. Argentina (Misiones above the Iguacu Falls). Perhaps also in the Rio Paraguay drainage, Mato Grosso, Brazil.
Original range extended from c. and se. Brazil (upper and middle Rio Paraguay and Rio Parana in Mato Grosso do Sul, Sao Paulo, Parana and Santa Catarina) to adjacent e. Paraguay and ne. Argentina (Misiones, Iguazu Falls and Rio Uruguay).
