Range

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, s. and e. slopes of Mauna Loa in the Saddle Road area, Pu'u Wa'awa'a and in Hualalai on the s. slope of Mauna Kea.
Introduced to the Is. of Maui (Haleakala National Park, Haleakala crater in the Paliku Cabin area) and population of escaped birds has become established on Kauai in the Waimea Canyon area. During the summer, the birds feed on the lava flows of Mauna Loa during the day. At dusk and dawn, they fly across the Saddle Road (between mile posts 17 and 21 from Hilo) to and from their roost on the lower slopes of Mauna Kea. This species has the smallest range of any goose.
