Africa s. of the Sahara;
S. Mauritania, Senegambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, s. Mali, s. Niger, Ghana, Nigeria to s. Cameroon, c. to ne. Chad, Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo in the Congo River valley, Zaire (Kivu Volcanoes, absent from the forested c. region), Sudan to s. Egypt (Aswan Dam, upper Nile Valley), Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, w. Somalia, Kenya (Lake Turkana), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia (middle Zambezi River from w. of Victoria Falls to Katombora Rapids), Angola (except in the ec. region), Namibia (Caprivi Strip), Botswana, Malawi (Rift Valley lakes), Zimbabwe (Luangwa River), Mozambique and South Africa (Lake St. Lucia, n. Zululand, Berg River, sw. Cape Province).
Widely domesticated and introduced to se. England (East Anglia and n. Norfolk, Norfolk Broads, Holkham Park) and the Netherlands.
Formerly bred in se. Europe (Danube River) until the 18th century and Israel (Palestine) until ca. 1933.
