Formerly wintered n. in the Quadaquivir Delta, sw. Spain. S. Ethiopia (Bale Mountains, Saneti Plateau). Se. Europe in the Mediterranean Basin from e. Greece, the nw. Black Sea region of Bulgaria, Romania and s. Russia to Turkey and e. through the Caucasus, n. Syria, n. Iraq, n. and w. Iran (Seistan) s. to cn. Saudi Arabia and e. to Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan, Kirghiz, Afghanistan, n. Pakistan (Hindu Kush), s. Siberia from Lake Baikal to Transbaicalia (Pamir Mountains, upper Amur River), Mongolia (Altai Mountains, Achitu Nor, Orog Nor), w. and c. China (Manchuria, Kansu, Tsinghai to Sinkiang) to Amurland and s. to Himalayas of Tibet (Tibetan Plateau, Lhassa), n. India (Ladakh), Nepal (Khumbu region, Manang District) and Sikkim.

Commonly maintained in captive collections worldwide. Often escapes from captivity.
