Nw. Africa, breeds in Morocco (Iriki with concentrations in the Moulouya Delta and coastal deserts s. to Cape Juby), Rio di Oro (Spanish Sahara), w. Algeria (Atlas Mountains) and n. Tunisia. Formerly wintered n. in the Quadaquivir Delta, sw. Spain. S. Ethiopia (Bale Mountains, Saneti Plateau). Se. Europe in the Mediterranean Basin from e. Greece, the nw. Black Sea region of Bulgaria, Romania and s. Russia to Turkey and e. through the Caucasus, n. Syria, n. Iraq, n. and w. Iran (Seistan) s. to cn. Saudi Arabia and e. to Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan, Kirghiz, Afghanistan, n. Pakistan (Hindu Kush), s. Siberia from Lake Baikal to Transbaicalia (Pamir Mountains, upper Amur River), Mongolia (Altai Mountains, Achitu Nor, Orog Nor), w. and c. China (Manchuria, Kansu, Tsinghai to Sinkiang) to Amurland and s. to Himalayas of Tibet (Tibetan Plateau, Lhassa), n. India (Ladakh), Nepal (Khumbu region, Manang District) and Sikkim.
Winters s. in Egypt (Suez, Nile Valley), n. Sudan, Ethiopia and e. Greece, s. Russia (Azerbaijan, e. Caspian Sea), Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, e. Iraq, n. Iran (Lakes Urmia and Rezaiyeh) and e. in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan (Indus Valley), India (Kashmir, Garhwal, Ganges Plain, Chilka, Lake Orissa), e. and s. China (mostly s. of the Yangtze River to Kwangsi and n. Yunnan, but also in Hopeh, s. Shensi, s. Szechwan and w. Sinkiang), Tibet, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, North Vietnam (Tonkin), n. South Vietnam (Annam), Taiwan, Korea (Kimpo Peninsula) and Japan.
Commonly maintained in captive collections worldwide. Often escapes from captivity.
