Range

New Zealand;
S. and e. North Island s. of a line from Mokau to East Cape including the Volcanic Plateau, Gisborne, Hawke Bay in Taihape District, ne. Taranake and Tongariro National Park. On South Island, most frequently occurs e. from Marlborough to Southland. Also occurs on Stewart, Great Barrier, Little Barrier, Kapiti and D'Urville Is.
Moulting birds gather on the lakes and estuaries of s. Westland, South Island.
During the s. winter, birds gather on the Bay of Plenty, Firth of Thames and sometimes Manukau.
Formerly occurred on Chatham Is.? and Lord Howe Is.
