Range

Moluccas, New Guinea and n. Australia;
(1) Moluccas (Ternate, Halmahera, Bacan, Obi, Buru, Kelang), Seram, Seram Laut, Tanimbar, and Aru Is., w. Papuan Is. (Yapen Is.), New Guinea (Bensbach River, Tonda Wildlife Management Area, Trans-Fly Region and Port Moresby Area) and D'Entrecasteaux Is. (Goodenough and Fergusson Is.).
(2) N. and e. Australia from Wyndham and the Fitzroy River in n. Western Australia and the n. Northern Territory to n. Queensland along the e. coast from the Cape York Peninsula s. to ca. Gregory and Croydon in the w. and Cairns, Bowen and Broad Sound in the e. Ducklings have been recorded from the Sanderson Sewage Farm, Darwin, Point Stuart Station, Kapalga and Cannon Hill in Arnhem Land and the Princess Charlotte Bay area and near Proserpine in Queensland.
Gathers during the dry season on the Alligator River in the Northern Territory.
Formerly occurred in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia and ne. New South Wales;
