Range

South America; Africa and Madagascar; S. Asia;
Three populations;
(1) E. Panama (Rio La Jagua, Rio Chucunaque), Colombia (nw. Choco, Laguna San Rafael, Purace National Park, Laguna de Fuquene in s. Boyaca, Sabana de Bogota, Lago Cumbal in s. Narino), Venezuela (Orinoco Basin, Guarico, n. and c. Anzoategui), Guyana, Surinam, Guiana, e. Ecuador, e. Peru, c. and e. Bolivia, Brazil (Amazonian region, Rio Negro s. to Bahia, Mato Grosso and Sao Palo), Paraguay, Uruguay and nc. and ne. Argentina (s. Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios and occasionally Buenos Aires). Occurs w. of the Andes s. in sw. Ecuador and nw. Peru.
(2) In Africa, s. from s. Mauritania, Senegambia (Senegal Delta), s. Mali (Niger Delta), Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, s. Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, s. Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, s. Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, s. Somalia, Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya (Lake Naivasha and has bred in Serengeti NP), Tanzania, Angola, Zambia (Luangwa Valley, Kafue Flats), Malawi, Mozambique, n. Namibia, n. and e. Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa (ne. Cape Province, Transvaal, Orange Free State, Natal), Lesotho and Madagascar (Bemamba Lake, Soalala Lakes, Betsiboka River). In Asia, from se. Pakistan, Nepal (w. terai, Kosi) across India e. to Assam and s. to Mysore, Bangladesh, Burma, nw., ne. and c. Thailand, Cambodia, c. Laos, Cochinchina (s. South Vietnam) and s. China (w. and s. Yunnan).
