Fragmented distribution;
(1) Pakistan (lower Sind, Indus, Punjab), Nepal (Rapti Dun, w. tarai), India (Gujarat on Lake Nalsarovar and Surandranagar Reservoirs, Orissa on Lake Chilika), Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand (Sanambin Non-hunting Area), Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, s. China (n. of the Yangtze River in Szechwan and Hupeh and s. to n. Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Yunnan), Hainan, Philippines (n. Luzon (?)), Malaya Peninsula, s. Sumatra (Riau and Lingga Archipelagos), w. Java, Bali, nw. Borneo (winter visitor, Bangkau Lake, n. Sarawak, Cape Sirik, Lundu), n. Sulawesi and n. New Guinea (Sepik River and s. highlands at Lake Kandep).
Winters in se. China (s. Kwangtung), Bahrain and Oman (Dhofar).
(2) Ne. Australia, Queensland mostly between Cape Melville and Cape Townsend (Rockhampton) mostly in the Townsville region (Townsville Common Environmental Park, Horseshoe Lagoon), but extending from ca. Princess Charlotte Bay s. to Brisbane, inland e. of Great Dividing Range to districts of Atherton in Atherton Tablelands (Borrow Pitts and Nardellos Lagoon),, Charter's Towers, Clermont and Taroom.
Formerly s. to Hunter River, New South Wales where it now only occurs as a vagrant;
