Range

E. and s. Africa;
Africa s. of ca. 17°N from Ethiopia s. in the Rift Valley in s. Sudan (Darfur), ex. n. and ex. s. Somalia, Kenya (Lake Elmenteita, Lake Nakuru, Lake Rudolf, Arusha NP, Lake Manyara, Ngorngoro Crater and Lake Lygarja in Serengeti NP), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, ex. ne. and ex. se. Zaire, Tanzania, sw. Zambia (Liuwe Plain in Barotse Province, Kafue Flat, Barotse Plain, Matabele Plains), Malawi, Mozambique, w. Zimbabwe through c. Angola and s. in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Transvaal, Cape Province).
Nonbreeding birds gather in the dry season in the Lake Chad region, s. Chad and from e. Niger through c. Nigeria and Ghana to ex. n. Cameroon.
Migrants also occur in the Sudan and ex. nc. Central African Republic.
Vagrants occur as far n. as ex. se. Libya (Kufra) and ex. sw. Egypt (Nile Valley).
