Range
Four widely separated populations;
(1) S. Canada (s. British Columbia, nw. Alberta, c. Saskatchewan, s. Manitoba, s. Ontario to Nova Scotia and sw. Newfoundland), the United States (c. Minnesota s. to s. Arizona, s. New Mexico, wc. Texas, w. Oklahoma, n. Alabama, n. Georgia and coastal North Carolina), and nw. Mexico (nw. Baja).
Winters from sw. Canada and the e. Great Lakes through s. United States s. to Mexico s. to Jalisco and Veracruz, and Guatemala. A few birds winter in Bermuda.
(2) Sc. Mexico in the volcano belt (Puebla, Tlaxcala, Mexico, c. Veracruz, Chiapas). Ex. s. Mexico (c. Chiapas) to Guatemala.
(3) Ex. sw. Colombia along both slopes of Narino sw. from Tuquerres and Sibundoy and the Andes of n. Ecuador from Carchi sw. to Loja (San Lucas).
(4) Coastal w. Peru from La Libertad (Trujillo) s. to Arequipas, Pisco and Lima. A single specimen from Imbabura Province, n. Ecuador.
