Range
W. to c. Palearctic;
Europe (Faroe Is., British Isles, coastal w. Norway, s. Sweden, Netherlands, Poland (Biebrza Marsh), Hungary (e. of Bodrog River), Belarus, and e. through c. Russia), w. Siberia to the Lake Baikal region and w. Yakutia and s. to n. Spain (rarely), s. France (Pyrenees Mountains), n. Italy, Balkans, n. Greece, Romania (Danube Delta), Turkey (rarely), n. Africa (Egypt) and Middle East (Jordan River Valley, Saudi Arabia, Mahazat as-Sayd Reserve), n. Iran to c. Asia in the Transcaucasus, Kazakhstan and Altai, w. China (w. Xinjiang).
Migrant in the plains between Irbid and Mafraq, Jordan and in Africa through Kenya (Mara Game Refuge and Tsavo West National Park).
Winters in Mediterranean Basin mostly in n. Africa (occasionally in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia and Egypt) s. to s. Africa from Zaire and c. Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, n. and e. Botswana, and e. South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, and Transvaal), and Madagascar.
