Range
S. South America;
Restricted range;
Patagonian Argentina from 47° to 51°S, Lake Escarchadas (about 50km e. and slightly s. of Calafate, Santa Cruz), other small lakes in c. Santa Cruz and small volcanic lakes on the high plateau of Meseta de Strobel. The main population occurs between Lakes Strobel, Quiroga and Cardiel to the sw. on the plateau near Lake San Martin and to the n. on the Asador plateaux.
Winters along the Atlantic coast of Argentina (Coyle Estuary), but some birds may remain on large ice-free lakes such as Islote, Quiroga and Strobel. Casual in Magellanes, Chile near Payne.
